Q: What vehicles are classified as freight?
A: Any vehicle that is being used for or designed for the carrying of goods. Therefore they cannot travel on passenger tariffs, and must pay commercial freight rates. Freight rates are subject to VAT.
As a general rule, the following will need to travel as freight:
- Vehicles designed for commercial use
- Vans
- Vehicles longer than 6 metres in length
- Vehicles carrying goods for commercial use.
- Vehicles carrying furniture

Q: Can i travel as a tourist when carrying commercial goods?
A: In most cases no.

Q: Why would I have to travel as a freight passenger?
A: If you are carrying furniture, commercial goods, are travelling in a vehicle designed for commercial use (a van / mini van for example) or in a vehicle longer than 6 metres in length.

Q: Can I book a freight crossing online?A: Not at the moment and not on the directferries.co.uk website.

A: Most conventional passenger ferries also carry freight traffic.
Some ferry companies have separate areas onboard for freight vehicles and their drivers.
In general, a fast craft / catamaran will not carry freight vehicles.
