More holidaymakers will be booking their ferry crossings to France earlier this year than usual because of the London Olympics, according to new research.
A poll conducted by ING Direct found a quarter (24 per cent) of families will be taking their annual getaway in May rather than the more traditional holidaying months of July and August, because they don't want to miss out on the excitement of the Games.
Another reason for this 'Maycationing' is due to the fact it is cheaper to get away on trips to France during off-peak times, as the savings provider found a typical family holiday costs nearly £900 less in May than in the peak summer period.
Chief executive of ING Direct Richard Doe commented: "It's understandable that families are choosing not to go on holiday during the summer months when they can get away in the spring for much less and save money.
"This is compounded by the fact we're set for an outstanding summer of sport, with one of the greatest sporting events in the world taking place on our doorstep."
Meanwhile, research from Direct Line has found that many Brits have been taking advantage of the January sales and offers by booking their main holiday already.
Nearly one in five people have sorted out their accommodation and travelling plans for short or long-haul destinations, while another 20 per cent are still perusing the deals on offer.
Tom Bishop, head of travel insurance at Direct Line, commented: "Whether you're taking advantage of January sales to book your holiday now, or just scouring the web for deals later on, be sure to book your travel insurance as soon as you book any of your travel arrangements.
"That way, you'll be covered for cancellation should you be unable to travel for an unexpected reason, and you won't have to hunt around for a deal at the last minute," he added.
